The great name debate continues, so after a quick google search I found the top names of 2012 according to the Social Security office. Now, of course we’ve been tossing some around for awhile (we call it the short list) and I’m actually pretty excited to see the ones we’re narrowing in on aren’t on this list.

Meanwhile, you can also search and see how your favorite names rank by state. In a quick search of Oregon, there are a few boy names that fall on both lists but there appears to be a bit of a difference. There’s a clear trend in Oregon for older more established names. Alexander, William, Henry, Samuel, Daniel, Benjamin all make the top ten, while nationwide slightly more modern names such as Mason, Ethan, Jayden, Aiden are ranking high.
Though when you look at girls names it’s clear what the favorites are. In fact, the same four names rank in the top four on both lists, Sophia and Emma taking first and second respectively on both lists. While Isabella and Olivia round out the next two spots.

So, while we have a few on “the short list” we haven’t selected our name just yet. I’m quite surprised actually at how difficult choosing a name is. There’s no pressure here, right?
So how long did it take for you to chose a name? Did you wait until delivery day to select one? Did you share your name before baby was born or keep it private? Enlighten me on your name game process, because we’ve still got a ways to go.
